There are a number of mainboard options available for Ampere Altra ARM-based servers.

I would ideally like to buy a 128 core or higher 1U or 2U rackmount machine for running a (if possible, type 1) hypervisor and several Linux and FreeBSD instances on top.

Which boards/vendors can you recommend, which should be avoided? Are there any ARM-based alternatives you could recommend?

What is the status on #firmware updates for #arm #Snapdragon Laptops?

Can they be updated with #fwupd, or do you need a Windows dualboot?

On #AsahiLinux you need a #MacOS partition to update the firmware. But the Snapdragon laptop firmware might be more open? Are there differences between manifacturers, like #Lenovo supporting fwupd normally?

So small update on #linux on #arm chromebooks: the kernel installation process involves writing binary images as a partition instead of putting the #kernel files on a /boot partition.
To get the currently running kernel config I used "modprobe configs" and you get a compressed config under /proc/config.gz,
I copied and extracted the file to compile with mainline/gentoo kernel sources.
I added the drivers via "make menuconfig" and compiled the kernel.
Reminder that usually this is a monolithic kernel without initrd, so the drivers needed to boot the system are not compiled as a module.

For development on my laptop I mostly use Chimera Linux in WSL. Sometimes I need a more… conventional distro. For that I've been using Debian, and not my preferred Arch Linux. Arch is officially x86_64 only, so I originally wrote it off on this Snapdragon X machine.

Tonight I remembered Arch Linux ARM exists, and they do have generic aarch64 root file systems for download. I did a `wsl --import` and it's working well. Not sure why I didn't think of this earlier.

How well does these Snapdragon X elite #arm laptops work with #Linux ?

All I can find is old messages that say they have a lot of issues. Has situation improved or are they just abandon(hard)ware now?

I was thinking about buying a new laptop and i would love some silence and good battery life. And linux of course.
