Happy birthday to chemist William Henry Perkin (1838-1907)! This #lino block print ‘William Henry Perkin Discovers Mauve’ is about how the British chemist & entrepreneur made the serendipitous discovery of the 1st synthetic organic dye: mauveine.

Perkins entered the Royal College of Chemistry in London in 1853 when he was only 15, studying with August Wilhelm von Hofmann. 🧵1/n

For #BlackHistoryMonth pharmaceutical #chemist Alice Ball (1892-1916) who developed 1st effective treatment for #leprosy. Though her life was cut tragically short, her research saved 1000s from exile & painful, ineffective lifelong treatment for leprosy, & she was a trailblazer for women & Black scientists.

Ball studied #chemistry at UW earning a BSc & 2nd degree in pharmacy 2 years later. 🧵1/n

Happy birthday to Russian #chemist Dmitri Mendeleev (1834 – 1907) who published the periodic table. Born in Siberia, the youngest child of a large family, his father was a school principal until he lost his sight & job. His mother then restarted her family’s abandoned glass factory to support them. His father died & factory was destroyed by fire. Despite economic hardship, 13 year old Mendeleev attended the Gynasium in Tobolsk. 🧵

brought the surviving kids to England when she was 5. She graduated in #physics with the highest score ever for a London University, with a BSc from Bedford College of Women in ‘22, & MSc from UCL in ‘24. Nobel laureate W.H. Bragg offered her a spot on his team at the Royal Institution, where she worked until she married in ‘27 & followed her husband research #chemist Thomas Lonsdale to Leeds for a job. She continued to correspond with Bragg & calculated structure factors while focusing 🧵3/b

Working on my next print for #printersolstice2425 prompt cobalt. All animals need cobalt for metabolism, even if it’s an ultratrace element in us. We need it as cobalamin aka vitamin B12. So I’m working on another scientist portrait: x-ray crystallographer & chemist Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin (1910-1994) who won the Nobel for determining the structure of bio molecules vitamin B12, penicillin & insulin.

For the #printerSolstice2425 prompt oxygen: my #linocut of Claudine Picardet (1735-1820) #chemist, #mineralogist, meteorologist & perhaps most importantly, translator of latest science from Swedish, English, German, Italian & possibly Latin to French at the height of the chemical revolution.

She married barrister & member of the Académie royale des sciences, arts, et belles-lettres de Dijon, Claude Picardet in 1755, her entry into 🧵

Happy birthday to Marie Skłodowska-Curie (1867 – 1934, Polish-born, naturalized-French #physicist & #chemist at work in her lab. The contents of her lab glassware appropriately glow-in-the-dark!

Marie Curie was the 1st woman to win a Nobel prize, the only woman to ever win TWO Nobel prizes, and the only person ever to win in two different sciences: #physics & #chemistry! 🧵1/n

Exploring Nickel(II) Catalysts for Fluorinated Ether Formation

Xavi Ribas, University of Girona, explains in an interview how he together with colleagues conducted a mechanistic study that provides valuable insights for the future design of new F-containing bioactive fluorinated aryl-alkyl ethers

Happy birthday Rosalind Franklin (1920 – 1958), #chemist & x-ray #crystallographer whose x-ray diffraction images were instrumental to discovering double-helix structure of #DNA, made important contributions to #carbon & #virus research, was 1 of the great scientists of the 20th century.

Watson’s bio lead some to (inaccurately) joke, "What did Watson and Crick discover?" "Rosalind Franklin's notes." While it’s important that …

I have not busted out my molecular model kit in a while, so let's go back to O-Chem with MDMRN.

Here we have a new compound in a ring shape with a purple ball representing a Nitrogen atom. In terms of chemical properties, in it's pure form, this compound is a colorless liquid with a foul, fishy odor.

So - what did I make here? Can you guess the compound?

Let me know your best guess in the comments!

I don't talk about work here a whole lot, but I'm a chemical engineer by education and have been doing environmental engineering work for the past 17 years.

So, I have an organic chemistry molecular model kit that I have kept at work for years. I, periodically, make contaminants I've seen at various sites across my 17 year career cleaning up the environment.

Do you know what this chemical is supposed to be? Leave a comment below with your guess!
