Rees-Mogg used a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang quote for his thank-you-and-goodbye-i-must-get-home-to-Nanny speech: "From the ashes of disaster grow the roses of success"

He probably intended it to be a quote from Fleming, but it isn't. It's from the Sherman Brothers and is sung by the character of Grandpa, who is delusionally out of touch and pretends to travel the world while actually hiding in his tiny shed.

I note without comment that Rees-Mogg served as Minister For Brexit Opportunities in BoJo's farcical government.

John Crace writes: "Liz Truss departed this political life in a flurry of indifference towards her constituents. The feeling was mutual. She was slow hand-clapped at her count. A dismal end to a dismal prime minister. But I’ll miss her nonetheless. Where will Popular Conservatism be without the woman who made it so Unpopular? Her unknowing sense of the absurd was comedy gold".

The Guardian · Rishi Sunak departs with a brief nod to his achievements – mostly imaginedBy John Crace

Speaking as a Northern Irish Protestant, some Unionists have completely colonial attitudes to the place.

The North of Ireland does not need these sorts of politicians; it does not need the Union at all.

And Unionism, if you like that sort of thing, would be better and more successful without them.

"Goodbye to seven different Chancellors of the Exchequer since 2010, who all prioritized the cutting of taxes for their millionaire and billionaire donors over lifting the UK’s most vulnerable and marginalized communities out of poverty and squalor."

Ever wondered why Nigel’s been seen with all these rich business types lately, following him everywhere. It’s because he’s quietly been handing over his interests until he can take them back

What this actually felt like was Sunak saying:

“Look, I’m a nice guy really, extremely employable by very rich liberal types, and not really a racist or a transphobe. I just had to pretend to be in order to win votes from white working class bigots and hold the fort against the fascists in my own party. You know how it is. It’s just a job. It’s not real. It’s not like anyone got hurt, did they. No-one who *matters*, anyway.”

Mastodon 🐘Nick (@Nickiquote@mstdn.social)Kind of a superficially gracious farewell speech from Sunak there, but talking about British values of “kindness, decency and tolerance” about his own family’s experience as a minority in Britain, after spending the last several years relentlessly and brutally putting the boot into some of the most vulnerable people in the world for political ends, including asylum seekers and trans kids, shouldn’t fool anyone. #torydeathparty #ge2024
