Rees-Mogg used a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang quote for his thank-you-and-goodbye-i-must-get-home-to-Nanny speech: "From the ashes of disaster grow the roses of success"

He probably intended it to be a quote from Fleming, but it isn't. It's from the Sherman Brothers and is sung by the character of Grandpa, who is delusionally out of touch and pretends to travel the world while actually hiding in his tiny shed.

I note without comment that Rees-Mogg served as Minister For Brexit Opportunities in BoJo's farcical government.

Speaking as a Northern Irish Protestant, some Unionists have completely colonial attitudes to the place.

The North of Ireland does not need these sorts of politicians; it does not need the Union at all.

And Unionism, if you like that sort of thing, would be better and more successful without them.

What this actually felt like was Sunak saying:

“Look, I’m a nice guy really, extremely employable by very rich liberal types, and not really a racist or a transphobe. I just had to pretend to be in order to win votes from white working class bigots and hold the fort against the fascists in my own party. You know how it is. It’s just a job. It’s not real. It’s not like anyone got hurt, did they. No-one who *matters*, anyway.”
