I'm hoping somebody can advise me, or point me in the direction of advice. Apologies in advance that this post is a bit long, all-over-the-place, and hashtag-heavy. I really don't know what I'm doing.
What I'm trying to do is make MIDI renditions of music that sound pretty good. For myself as a composer, and for stimuli in music cognition research.
My first problem: I need to commit to a DAW and learn how to use it well. I used Logic in my undergrad, but I do not have a Mac and no longer have access to it. I have Mixbus from a music recording class, but it doesn't seem ideal for MIDI-based projects. I have MuseScore 4, but I haven't learned what it can (and can't) do yet.
My second problem: I want to use high-quality sample libraries, but I do not know how to get started.
I like open source, but I am not at all opposed to paying for software and sample libraries. Or buying new hardware. I just don't want to pay for things that aren't going to be useful for me (I also prefer one-time fees to ongoing subscriptions). Windows or Linux.
