#Cat Death Losses Due to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in #SouthDakota

"#Veterinarians and laboratory diagnosticians are fielding reports of death losses in cat populations linked to avian influenza infections.

"Beginning in 2022, an #H5N1 subtype of highly pathogenic avian influenza (abbreviated as HPAI) virus caused death losses in domestic turkeys and chickens in South Dakota and elsewhere in the United States, an outbreak that continues. The HPAI virus causes respiratory and multiple organ failure in affected birds, typically appearing as increased numbers of dead birds in large commercial operations, as well as smaller backyard flocks. Deaths in wild birds, typically migrating waterfowl but also other bird species, have been observed at the same time, as well as spillover of the virus into mammals, such as raccoons, foxes, skunks, and other species.

"In Spring 2024, the HPAI virus began infecting #DairyCows, causing drops in milk production and other signs of illness. Unlike infections in other species, widespread death losses have not been associated with HPAI infections in dairy cows.

"About the same time as its emergence in dairy cows, the HPAI virus was implicated in deaths of domestic cats in the vicinity of affected farms. Most affected cats showed #neurologic signs, such as #tremors or #seizures, for a short period of time before dying.

"Since that time, three cases of substantial death losses in groups of outdoor domestic cats in South Dakota have been described. In each of these cases, there has been no apparent link to dairy cows, other livestock, or domestic poultry."

@caregivers As a completely different side note to my post of a cleaning tip, it appears that perhaps there is a reason for the massive and “explosive” uh “incident”. Son has had a seizure in bed a couple hours later. We are having to take turns now staying in his room in case another one comes. It was completely silent so a bit scary. He has status epilepticus so that means they don’t stop unless we use the rescue treatments. #Seizures

What, pray tell, is the point in being told your doctor will call you at 18h45 so make sure you're in to receive the call, only for them not to ring at all?

I can't sit doing nothing. I gave them an hour, so they'll have to reschedule. I can rest or do stuff better believing the appointment isn't happening than trying to do something aware that a call /might/ happen.

I have to live as though I can't have #seizures, not thinking one /might/ happen.

Just posted a local article about a heat dome coming over the Valley on Thursday. I knew Wednesdays and Thursday were forecast to be 109° but had no idea it can be extended and worse. 114° now possible. Now I think it’s possible that my son had the seizure because the barometric pressure is changing dramatically. He gets heat-triggered

It’s 7 hours later now and son is still sleeping sound but sleeping intensely - does that make sense? Still watching and listening close in case another seizure comes. Circular cause is in question here - did the possible migraine this morning cause his seizure at 2 pm? OR did seizure at 2 pm cause a migraine he definitely has hours later. A mystery: just in case we need to tell doctors what is going on, any clues or symptoms need to be considered. Little sleep ahead. #Seizures #Epilepsy

On the bright side it happened when he and I, and caregiver all with 3 feet of each other. I saw it while driving in my mirror, he in back seat. Caregiver had dozed off so I had to get loud when I pulled over. I could give the directions and caregiver did fine, no freak out. Now he’s seen one, so he’ll take it more seriously. And now he knows why we are on the alert if Drew suddenly quits talking. #Seizures #Epilepsy

Seizure (CW?)
He's sleeping now. Seizure in car on way home from shopping. Full grand mal 90 seconds. 1 pass VNS magnet and it worked to stop seizure in 15 seconds. We will watch close for a while then just pay more attention. There was no sound. He didn't move around or jerk. He had tiny tremors in his jaw about 1 minute following.

FYI - he has status seizures meaning they don’t stop without intervention. We are lucky the VNS implant works well to control many seizures.

Wondering again, is something happening with Drew. He just woke from seizure 5 am, pounding on the wall and frantic. Day 19 on migraines unless the second round of IV meds given yesterday has started working to stop these current migraines. The Friday round didn’t stop the migraine coming back. One day yet to go on these IV migraine cocktails. John heard him and ran in first, then me 30 seconds behind. Sudden seizures out of sleep produce much anxiety for all concerned. #Seizures
