So when I was in the second grade, let's say 1974/75, for some reason one day #JamesDoohan showed up at my school.
The reason, in fact, was that one of his relatives worked there (Denver) & thought the kids might like it if he were to visit. And so it came to pass.
One afternoon, we were all suddenly, unexpectedly assembled in the auditorium. Mr D, as himself, in street clothes, not in character as Scotty, introduced himself & made some brief comments to the effect that, "It's really great to be here."
Then the floor, as it were, was opened for questions. Soon a kid my age (7ish) a few seats down from me shot up his arm and then breathlessly inquired: When you get into the transporter and beam down to the planet, how does that work?
So far having avoided entering the character, Doohan now smiled and indulgently explained, "Well, it mixes up the atoms & molecules in our bodies, turns them to pure energy, then reassembles them on the planet."
At 7, I thought:
NO IT DOESN'T.
It's science FICTION. It's not real. No such thing ever happens. What the *!@$ is wrong with this kid, and why is JD humoring him?
Which I guess explains a lot of my relationships with my peers throughout life. Lol
