Als diese ihm zugunsten von Karajan den Posten des Chefdirigenten verweigern, kommt es zum Bruch. Erst 1992 treffen Celibidache und das Orchester wieder aufeinander – auf Bitten des damaligen Bundespräsidenten Richard von Weizsäcker. Die Begegnung wird eine Sternstunde der Musik.

Bernard Haitink you have listed already. I'd add two more names for the core triangle that spans the Bruckner universe: Günter Wand and Sergiu Celibidache.

Late Celibidache performances are perhaps the most unorthodox interpretations in this set. I was fortunate to hear him conduct Bruckner's 5th live in Berlin in the early 1990s.

As a bonus: vintage recordings by Wilhelm Furtwängler, unique like everything he did.
