Wonderful to finally experience the reconstructed (soundtrack, photos, script, silent footage) scenes on ‘The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes’ blu-ray. I think they would’ve added hugely to the texture, breadth, depth, humour, and soul of the film. Such a pity. Also, being a Doctor Who fan has trained me well for appreciating recons.

Though not part of the main plot, it’s maddening to think anyone would consider those funny, inventive, touching, scenes disposable. The fact the movie is still a masterpiece, even filleted, is a testament to a truly great filmmaker, superb cast, and expert crew.
