It comes from a time when the internet was far less corrupted by corporate taint. Sites like these just feel honest.
@DavBot that site should have a "heritage overlay" (basically a fancy way of saying "it's heritage, you can't knock it down) on it so if anyone buys the domain in future, they have to keep the site running on the main domain

Would be nice if that were a thing. Fortunately it's not too difficult to make a bash script to wget the site, its assets and sed to swap the domain name in the code for the archives so it functions, then host on github for free.
