A Game Boy Speedometer, just because you can.
The “world’s worst digital dash”, a Nintendo Game Boy as a digital speedometer. Interfacing the handheld with the vehicle’s CAN bus system, this project has something to offer.

Showing real-time vehicle speed on the Game Boy sounds like it should be relatively easy, but the iconic game system wasn’t exactly built for such a task. Its 2 MHz CPU and 160×144 pixel dot-matrix screen were every kid’s dream in 1989, but using it as a car dashboard is pushing it. To bridge that gap, [John] designed two custom circuit boards.
One interfaces with the Game Boy, intercepting its memory requests and feeding it data from a microcontroller. The other processes the CAN bus signals, translating speed information into a form the Game Boy can display. Here is a quick demo of @kalilinux #NetHunter CAN Arsenal. Im using a CAN USB Analyzer and Arduino with a CAN bus shield to emulate Car signals.

Version 1.1.0 of CANnectivity, an #OpenSource USB to CAN adapter firmware based on @zephyr, is now available!
This release is based on the just released #Zephyr v4.1.0 and brings, among other things, explicit support for a number of popular USB to CAN adapter boards.

After some strange sporadic USB connectivity issues with a #dsdtech SH-C30A USB CAN Adapter I decided to upgrade to the newest daily build of the #candlelight_fw and now the device survives a host reboot and just works. Yay. Should've done this right at the beginning.

On one side, I am so deep in this rabbit hole that its not much more effort to implement the canbus communication and control algorithms in node-red or call call the C program https://www.beyondlogic.org/review-huawei-r4850g2-power-supply-53-5vdc-3kw/ ; On the other side I want to avoid to reinvent the wheel and focus on interesting stuff and not debugging can communication.
I read a forum discussion about people integrating the charger in their #victronenergy system, but they never wrote how they did it - apparently some kind of #mqtt #dbus bridge emulating a Victron charger with the actual communication done by some ESP8266/33; other people just set a default voltage/current and use it to top up their offgrid system with a small generator.

i have done a thing, lads: i've decided to make a shim to turn Forza Dash telemetry data into Volkswagen PQ35 #canbus traffic and so now, the the software gauge cluster I wrote some years ago is able to display rudimentary in-game driving data
conversely, i could also plug this into my MkV R32 and ruin its value on the market by running up the odometer without actually starting up the car. if i wanted to, y'know. but i don't. but i could.
äfunfact: #Tesla engineers seems not to get the message, that people using DLC > 8 to indicate proprietary information independent of the length of data.
