Spent half the day trying to get tap/click events to work on SVG elements on #Webkit.

Managed to make it work on MacOS, failed on iOS.

Looked at other sites to figure out how they do it. Turns out they don't. They just don't.

Did I say "spent" half a day? I meant wasted.

At this point I am half thinking I'll have my sites just refuse to work on Webkit.

No, I won't file a bug, I've filed enough.

#GNOME Web is truly independent from #Google. Though still dependent on #Apple, they don't have as much power as Google. It is still better than a Google monopoly. And #webkit is developed with proper APIs and meant to be embedded in other applications unlike Google's #blink.

One big feature missing is support for audio / video calls (webrtc). With #BoringSSL switching to Apache 2.0, a big blocker for webrtc support is resolved.

‘The UK's Mobile Browsers and Cloud Gaming Market Investigation Reference (MIR) has published its final report. The conclusion is clear: #Apple’s “#WebKit restriction”, which forces all browsers on #iOS to use Apple’s engine, harms competition, stifles innovation and functionality, particularly for #WebApps.’ #CMA #DMU #DMCCA

Open Web AdvocacyUK Regulator's Final Verdict: Apple’s Browser Engine Ban Harms Competition - Open Web Advocacy

This week in my search for a macOS+iOS alternative to Firefox I’m trying out Kagi’s Orion browser on macOS and iOS. It's WebKit based.

Pros: no telemetry (they say); built in ad and tracking blocking; can install Chrome and Firefox extensions; it can run uBlock Origin (even in iOS!).

Cons: not open source (their FAQ says they're "working on it”); requires iCloud for bookmark and tab syncing; WebKit.

Kagi is Bringing Orion Web Browser to Linux

Kagi, the company behind a paid, private search engine1 of the same name, has announced it’s bringing its Webkit-based Orion web browser to Linux. In a post on BlueSky, Kagi said: “We’re thrilled to announce that development of the Orion Browser for Linux has officially started!”. Feature-parity with the macOS version is expected by next year (all going well). Orion is said to best Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox in many areas on macOS: zero-telemetry browser; built-in ad and tracking blocking; lower memory usage; faster page speeds; greater battery efficiency, support for Chrome Extensions and Firefox Add-ons.
