This manuscript (📷 2) belongs to a group I discussed in my uOttawa MA thesis (sup.: Andrew Taylor); how amazing to see it in person. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/LegalHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LegalHistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/HistoryOfLaw" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HistoryOfLaw</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Law" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Law</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/RareBooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RareBooks</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Manuscripts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Manuscripts</span></a><br><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookhistodons" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookhistodons</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/medievodons" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>medievodons</span></a></span></p>
Timothy Lubin<p>This Am. J. of Legal History piece is my updated take on the social impact of legal documents in ancient &amp; medieval India (and wider SE Asia). Vivienne Dunstan<p>Last night's new to me <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Scots" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Scots</span></a> word was "perfyte", as in the 1648 <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/will" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>will</span></a> I was transcribing: "or thair severall mantenance until the sd tyme of thair marriage or perfyte age". Elsewhere the will specifies perfyte as "xxi yeirs complett" i.e. 21. This was all reminding me last night of the Madame de Pompadour <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/DoctorWho" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DoctorWho</span></a> episode - "She is not complete!" <a href="https://dsl.ac.uk/entry/dost/perfite_adj" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">dsl.ac.uk/entry/dost/perfite_a</span><span class="invisible">dj</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/Language" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Language</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ScotsLanguage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScotsLanguage</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ScotsLeid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScotsLeid</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/LegalHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LegalHistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ScottishLaw" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScottishLaw</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ScottishLegalHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScottishLegalHistory</span></a></p>
Timothy Lubin<p>My new article analyzes the implications of tax exemptions and juridical autonomy conferred in endowment grants in ancient and medieval India. I argue that such endowments served as state recognition and institutional support of Brahmins’ sacred status as a religious profession and a privileged caste.
