MikroTik TrainerSome days are very satisfying when I visit a client’s HQ in central London complaining of 40% packet loss and speeds of 80-90Mbps on their WiFi. After a site survey with Ekahau I soon find the problem. Incorrect AP power levels. Too much 2.4 coverage. Plenty of co-channel interference. 802.11b enabled. MikroTik TrainerOff to West London to conduct an <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ekahau" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Ekahau</a> based Wireless Diagnostics Survey. Client has had problems since the install of this UniFi system by a third party. No matter what they’ve done it’s been unreliable. Even <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ubiquiti" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Ubiquiti</a> Support have been involved and claim there is nothing wrong with the firmware or config. They say “it has to be the property itself doing it” and closed the case. I’ve not promised the client I’ll definately find anything wrong, but I’ll give it my best shot. 🧐

But the signal is not received on the phone. It’s received on dedicated receive only hardware called an <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ekahau" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Ekahau</a> SideKick usually worn on my rear hip. I walk in each direction back and forth so any difference caused by shielding by my body is cancelled out. I also turn off the WiFi and Bluetooth on my phone so that’s doesn’t affect the results either.

MikroTik TrainerWiFi surveying a very large and empty field for fun and profit using <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ekahau" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Ekahau</a> Site Survey in GPS mode. First time I’ve plotted out how good the newly installed WiFi is in a field. Or used GPS mode for that matter. First attempt failed as my iPhone claimed I was in a totally different field. Restarted iPhone and second attempt was spot on right. 🤷‍♂️. I think if I do any more of these I’ll invest in an e-scooter!

This time the completion of another <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Ekahau" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Ekahau</a> Site Survey using the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Sidekick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Sidekick</a> and then using that captured data to design the WiFi for a hotel seeking to become known for having the fastest internet rather than the worse (as now). We’re working with internet provider <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/GoInternet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#GoInternet</a> to install gigabit fibre and give them excellent WiFi performance. Reports have been sent to the client. Fingers crossed.

The hotel has had a power cut. On the upside, breakfast is very romantic by candle light. 😂
