@metin I wouldn't call Matrix decentralized.
matrix.org/vector.im is just too strong within the network to have a decentralized network, IMHO. YMMV.

@ij @metin I am surprised how many people I see on non-matrix.org servers. My university provides Matrix for all students, so in my case most of the people I write to are not on matrix.org (though I recognize that this far from the average experience). And this should only improve in the future with more lightweight alternatives to synapse becoming more mature.

@ij @metin Matrix *is* decentralized. I run my own Matrix server for the family. My employer runs a Matrix server. Several universities run their own server. And we all can send each other messages without any difficulty.

@jze @metin I tend too disagree. Yes you can run your own server. I do myself.
But the matrix.org server is too big and vector.im too. So Matrix as a company has a central position and will get notice of nearly all relationships and Communication. That‘s centralistic.
