While implementing more #GUI features with "just" #X11 (using #xcb and several "support libs", but no GUI #toolkit), I'm kind of creating my own toolkit. I guess this is unavoidable given the amount of code and complexity necessary. 
For that, I created a custom object model supporting virtual methods, reference counting, and "owning" other objects for recursive destruction, and I try to achieve a consistent interface for all the widgets I create ... and this is the result using what's there so far:

I have been using this toolkit (left) for about 45 years. The first toolkit I got from my father. Look at the Japanese price tag and the color deterioration of the plastic case
Another item is the nail clipper (right). I have been using this for about 40 years. It works perfectly fine
