elbowcrooker<p>No.3 in my series on the life cycle of the common frog:</p><p>Hundreds, if not thousands, of tadpoles wriggled about in the sunlit water earlier today.<br>Of course, only a tiny proportion will make it to froghood. They are predated by birds, newts, dragonfly larvae, grass snakes, frogs (!) and...... each other.<br>The pond is only 1.5 metres long and surrounded by tall trees and houses, but one year a pair of passing mallards spotted it and dropped in for a feed.<br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/frogs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>frogs</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/tadpoles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tadpoles</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/wildlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wildlife</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birds</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/garden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>garden</span></a></p>

You can even see the gill flares starting to grow out of the sides of the salamander larvae's head 🤩</p>
elbowcrooker<p>Further to my recent post about frogspawn, I'm happy to report that it has all hatched out. Hundreds of juvenile tadpoles have wriggled free of the 'jelly' and can now be seen feeding on it. They have been joined by a pond snail which is also tucking into this nutritious substance. The red caterpillar-like things are catkins from the silver birch and poplar trees that overlook the pond.<br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/frogs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>frogs</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/tadpoles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tadpoles</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/pond" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pond</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/pondlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pondlife</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/ponds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ponds</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/wildlifegardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wildlifegardening</span></a></p>
elbowcrooker<p>'Pond life' is sometimes used as an insult applied to particularly contemptible people but I feel that this is unfair to actual pond-dwelling creatures which, by contrast, are mostly harmless and frequently fascinating lifeforms.<br>Frogspawn is a case in point. You can see that our tiny garden pond is full of the stuff. Zoom in and you can tell that the embryos are starting to elongate towards the shape of a tadpole.<br><a href="https://toot.wales/tags/pond" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pond</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/frogspawn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>frogspawn</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/tadpoles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tadpoles</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/frogs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>frogs</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/pondlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pondlife</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/wildlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wildlife</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://toot.wales/tags/reptiles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>reptiles</span></a></p>

Kelly Wheaton :warriors:🦫💧🐸 🌻🌹<p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/FroggyTales" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FroggyTales</span></a> It is almost Christmas and I still have two tadpoles. Kelly Wheaton :warriors:🦫💧🐸 🌻🌹<p>I don't know who writes some of these expert articles. I just read "15-35 tadpoles per gallon of water" when raising tadpoles. My 18" bowl cannot hold over 2 gallons (probably less). Since February I have successfully raised hundreds into frogs at some times having 150-250 at a time. In the drainage ditch from which a rescued my original batch 7 years ago the water can be black with tadpoles. 35 is nonsense.
