Into April with a host of golden daffodils in the grounds of Sunderland's Grade I listed St Peter's Church, founded by Benedict Biscop in AD674 when the area was part of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria. Venerable Bede, who was brought by his parents to be educated at the monastic site which once occupied the grounds in this view, recorded that Benedict brought stonemasons and glassworkers from Gaul to help build the church, as these crafts were not yet established in Anglo-Saxon England.

Must admit, I'm really looking forward to being able to catch this Sunderland city view again soon, but from the higher perspective of the new pedestrian/cycle bridge across the River Wear.
Took this photograph prior to the riverside paths being closed off while construction of the bridge has been underway.
Due to open this summer, the new crossing will provide more direct and easier access between the the city centre and the new developments taking place across on the north side of the river, including the Stadium of Light.

A burst of sunlight in breezy conditions, with spindrift on the waves at Seaburn, Sunderland in North East England.
A couple walking their pet dogs, stop to take in the scene with the gentleman capturing the vista on his mobile phone camera (hope he got a good one!).
For those not familiar with the area, the background includes Roker Pier and Lighthouse, for more than a century helping to protect and guide shipping sailing in and out of the River Wear and the Port of Sunderland.

Edwardian architectural jewels in Sunderland's 'Cultural Quarter'.
The famous Empire Theatre, where it is no exaggeration to say that just about anybody who has been anybody in showbusiness has at one time or another, performed on it's stage.
Next door, the Dun Cow public house that is acknowledged as having one of the finest back bars around.
There is a story of American singer Howard Keel, star of the film musical 'Seven Brides for Seven Brothers', who performed on numerous occasions at the Empire and who is said to have enquired whether he could buy the back bar and have it shipped back home.
Not sure how true the story is, but thankfully, the Dun Cow's amazing interior remains intact and admired to this day.

Almost a double rainbow at Sunderland's historic Bronze Age site of Hasting Hill in North East England.
Back in 1911, an ancient burial cist was excavated which contained the skeletons of a child and an adult man.
The site was dated to the Bronze Age, which lasted from roughly 3300-1200 BC and consisted of six cremations and four inhumations buried in different parts, although the grave of the adult was thought to be the primary burial.
The man was buried with a pottery vessel, a flint knife, a bone pin, and part of a deer antler, and there were bones from various small mammals such as voles.
The small white object on the top of the hill is an OS triangulation point.

The Hilton shield, carved onto the side of the tomb of Sir William Hilton (Hylton) AD1376-1435.
Sir William's last resting place is inside St Peter's Church, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland in North East England.
Founded in AD674, that makes it one of the oldest Christian churches in the country.
Hylton Castle, upstream on the River Wear from St Peter's, would have once been part of the same parish.
