Cosette<p>I dedicate January to Prajnaparamita, "the Perfection of Wisdom" in Mahayana Buddhism. As the month comes to a close, I wanted to share what my January practice has looked like this year.</p><p><a href="https://cosettepaneque.com/one-witchs-january-practice-devoted-to-prajnaparamita/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">cosettepaneque.com/one-witchs-</span><span class="invisible">january-practice-devoted-to-prajnaparamita/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/blog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blog</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/Prajnaparamita" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Prajnaparamita</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/Buddhism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Buddhism</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/Paganism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Paganism</span></a></p>
Jayarava<p>Śūnyatā</p><p>In <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/Madhyamaka" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Madhyamaka</span></a>: śūnyatā is a metaphysical dogma referring mainly to the nonexistence of self-creating dharmas. Non-existence is perversely hypostatised as &quot;reality&quot;.</p><p>In <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/Praj%C3%B1%C4%81p%C4%81ramit%C4%81" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Prajñāpāramitā</span></a>: śūnyatā is an epistemic term that refers to the absence of dharmas in samādhi. Absence is a matter of nonapprehension (as per early Buddhist sources). </p><p><a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/sunyata" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>sunyata</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/buddhism" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>buddhism</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/buddhiststudies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>buddhiststudies</span></a></p>
Jayarava<p>In <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/Praj%C3%B1%C4%81p%C4%81ramit%C4%81" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Prajñāpāramitā</span></a>, <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/emptiness" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>emptiness</span></a> turns dependent arising on it&#39;s head. </p><p>Emptiness arises when all conditions for sensory experience are absent. And if any condition for sensory experience is present then emptiness doesn&#39;t arise or, arisen, it ceases. </p><p>This being that does not become<br />This not being, that does become.</p><p><a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/buddhism" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>buddhism</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/buddhiststudies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>buddhiststudies</span></a></p>
Jayarava<p>&quot;it begins to look like Prajñāpāramitā was an old lineage of Buddhist practice, probably transmitted orally from guru to śiṣya, and thus underappreciated by those who focus solely on texts.&quot;-- conclusion in a forthcoming article</p><p><a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/buddhiststudies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>buddhiststudies</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/prajnaparamita" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>prajnaparamita</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>history</span></a></p>
Jayarava<p>In Aṣṭasāhasrikā we often find Elder Subhūti stating that he does not know, apprehend, or perceive a dharma.* We never see him debating the existence of dharmas, one way or the other.</p><p>* E.g. evam apy aham enān āyuṣman śāriputra dharmān na vedmi, nopalabhe, na samanupaśyāmi (Vaidya 1960: 178)</p><p><a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/buddhiststudies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>buddhiststudies</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/Buddhism" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Buddhism</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/prajnaparamita" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>prajnaparamita</span></a></p>
Jayarava<p>The insistence that dharmas don&#39;t exist forces proponents into the dualistic position of having one metaphysical explanation for experience and a completely different metaphysical explanation for reality. <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/buddhiststudies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>buddhiststudies</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/twotruths" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>twotruths</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/prajnaparamita" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>prajnaparamita</span></a></p>
Jayarava<p>Since &lt;Prajñāpāramitāhṛdaya&gt; ostensibly copies from &lt;Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā&gt;, the pattern of differences between these two texts should be the central focus of research on the provenance of the Heart Sutra. </p><p>I&#39;m constantly surprised by how controversial this statement is perceived to be. </p><p><a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/buddhiststudies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>buddhiststudies</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/prajnaparamita" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>prajnaparamita</span></a></p>
Jayarava<p>In <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/academia" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>academia</span></a>, <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/Praj%C3%B1%C4%81p%C4%81ramit%C4%81" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Prajñāpāramitā</span></a> is a largely closed subject. There is one, hegemonic view, to which everyone uncritically subscribes. Only a handful of people around the world are actively doing research on this literature. After 200 years we have few reliable editions, and no reliable translations. Which is to say (almost) *no progress*. <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/Buddhiststudies" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Buddhiststudies</span></a></p>
