Duncan Grant. St. Blaise chapel, Lincoln Cathedral, UK, 1953-6.

The true sex lives of the Bloomsbury group were not revealed to the public until 1967, and homosexuality wasn't decriminalized in the UK til the same year. So imagine the daring affront to the establishment to paint such gay murals in one of the most venerable medieval buildings in Christendom. They were hidden for 30 years and it's a miracle they weren't erased. He used his lover as the model for Jesus. It's not subtle.

The erotic young beardless (and unapologetically Aryan blond) Jesus that caused such a huge scandal in the 1950s. He's carrying a lamb. Otherwise he could be mistaken for 1950s gay porn.

One of my favourite pictures from London's National Gallery. I confess I often hold this picture in my mind's eye as a form of escapism -- an escape from strip malls, bloated SUVs, megachurches with fundamentalist PowerPoints punctuated by bad rock and extempore prayer, cargo pants,
presidential make up, the Hobby Lobby...

The image depicts a late baroque painting with an oval frame, featuringVenus seated on a cloud, draped in a white and pink cloth. She has long, flowing hair and is surrounded by various mythological figures. To her left, a winged male figure , perhps representing Time, holds a baby, while a cherub with wings and a bow is positioned below them. In the background, two white doves fly, and other figures, including cherubs, are present, some holding flowers.
