It’s getting hard to put a smile on my face these days. Lots of negative nonsense all abound. But it’s pictures like these, that help remind me that there is still good in this world.

“How could the world go back to the way it was, when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer.”

Spring is coming onto the northern hemisphere and with that brings thoughts and plans for hiking adventures. I was fortunate to grow up in a family that cherished outdoor experiences and molded me into an avid outdoors person. I’m most happy after hiking and climbing all day through nature and watching a sunset on a mountaintop. Such as this photo deep in the heart of Olympic National Park in Washington.

In this second-person meditation on the Hoh Rain Forest of Olympic National Park, I contemplate its proliferation of abundant life. The forest becomes a patient guide for me, a moss-embroidered forest of wisdom, lined with ferns and storied over with trees older than memory. It asks nothing of us. Its only purpose is life itself.

Sacred Wonderland · The Abundant Life of the Hoh Rain Forest: Wisdom older than memoryThe Hoh Rain Forest waits as a patient guide, a moss-embroidered forest of wisdom storied over with trees older than memory.
I remember the last time I visited Ruby Beach, my first time in Olympic when I went with my parents back in 2017. My dad and I climbed across all of the washed up logs and waded in the water to see tidepools in the summer. I was 24.

This time around I got to revisit alone, driving along unplowed snowy roads at 6 in the morning. I climbed over the logs covered in snow, watched the sea anemones in the tide pools, and watched surf scoters dive for mussels. I can't explain how thrilling it is to visit the same place again and find something new in every season or even every week. People that check places off bucket lists and never return are missing out on a lot of chances to find awe and inspiration.

Over the past few days, I had the privilege of taking my first winter trip outside of the Southeast, visiting Seattle, Olympic National Park, and Vancouver in order to both hike and drop off supplies for my upcoming research cruise.

My first hiking stop was Storm King and Marymere Falls in Olympic National Park, and while I expected a lot of rainfall, what I didn't expect was all the snow that fell the entire time I was there. Seeing a temperate rainforest covered in snow is definitely something I'll treasure for a long time.
