worldcat.org lets you find books at libraries; sometimes your local library will have it!

Some public library systems offer interlibrary loan, where they can borrow a book (or get a copy of an article) from another library for you. (Academic libraries do this as a rule.)

Worldcat also links to a few online booksellers, including Better World Books, VitalSource, AbeBooks, and Am*z*n.

“This was an attempt to ‘#ThoughtPolice,’ & this victory over #totalitarianism is a testament to the courage of #librarians, #booksellers & #readers who refused to bow to #intimidation,” said Holly Dickson, the exec director of the #ACLU of #Arkansas.

Gov #SarahHuckabeeSanders, a #Republican, said in a statement that “#schools & #libraries shouldn’t put *obscene* material in front of our kids,” & she vowed to work w/ #TimGriffin, the state’s AG, to appeal the ruling.

Judge rules #ArkansaLaw allowing #criminal charges against #librarians is #unconstitutional

By ASSOCIATED PRESS, December 23, 2024

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — "A federal judge on Monday struck down key parts of an Arkansas law that would have allowed criminal charges against librarians and #booksellers for providing 'harmful' materials to minors.

"U.S. District Judge Timothy Brooks found that elements of the law are unconstitutional.

"'I respect the court’s ruling and will appeal,' Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin said in a statement to The Associated Press.

"The law would have created a new process to challenge library materials and request that they be relocated to areas not accessible to children. The measure was signed by Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders in 2023, but an earlier ruling had temporarily blocked it from taking effect while it was being challenged in court.

"'The law deputizes librarians and booksellers as the agents of censorship; when motivated by the fear of jail time, it is likely they will shelve only books fit for young children and segregate or discard the rest,' Brooks wrote in his ruling.

"A coalition that included the #CentralArkansasLibrarySystem in Little Rock had challenged the law, saying fear of prosecution under the measure could prompt libraries and booksellers to no longer carry titles that could be challenged."

“The benefit of being a bookseller is that writers and people in publishing don’t get the immediate positive feedback we get every day,” he says. “My personal philosophy is, ‘Trust in the reader, trust in the writer.’ ”

Did you know that when using my Ethical Bookseller Search Tool (which scours more ethical booksellers than #Amazon in one click) the cheapest result is as cheap or cheaper than Amazon for the majority of searches?! 🤯

Give it a whirl when searching for your next online book order. 📖 👇

I had grand plans with my partner to shift our book sales off amazon (because we both hate amazon) and sell directly from our own website. But it turns out having an ecommerce setup costs at least €30/month, which we can't justify. I need to research more but initial searching isn't promising.

It's difficult, maybe impossible, to just be able to sell books without sacrificing ethics.

I'm very open to suggestions!
