This beautiful lady is Solenopsis invicta. Measuring barely over 2 mm long, she is a member of an incredibly successful species.

Unfortunately, she is far outside her native range, and doing incredible damage to her local ecosystem.

It isn't her fault that she's a fire ant.

Noticed a couple #ants today on my walk that seemed to be... fighting was my first thought, but is almost certainly wrong. Communicating, I would guess, though it looks to me like one of those slap-fights in cartoons.

@futurebird probably knows what they're up to.

A winged ant on a floating leaf. He was in the water until he washed up on the leaf's shore, Robinson Crusoe-like. Here he stands, drying himself in the sun.

The surface of a slow-flowing forest creek with brown leaves of oak and river birch floating on top. A ray of sunlight gives the leaves a magical glow. The water sparkles at their edges, but elsewhere is dark as india ink. A small black winged ant stands in the sunshine on the dry surface of a leaf, having just emerged from the water. Lucky ant to avoid the hungry water-dwelling predators and the uncaring water. We wish him luck in his future endeavors.

@futurebird So tell me, she who knows, I've got some bugs coming up in the next section of my series of novellas. What's a good documentary on ant behaviour, possibly bees, for me to steal some cool bits for my alien bugs? My characters will be literally crawling into the nest, so I need a good primer. A lecture recorded at a university might also work.
