My inner image for the current WIP is a sprawling building complex, with parts from many different eras. Old and weighty or getting there. It has a musical side, but though it is melodious (and all characters get their solo, some even arias) it is not rhythmical.

The next one might well be a novel-in-verse.

While plenty of characters are naturally kind, he is actively, consciously kind.

#writingcommunity

One of my editing passes is to even put the MS through a text to speech engine in search of pieces that don't sound right.

Writing should flow, should have rhythms that help understand the story the speed, the critical pieces.

Hopefully, people don't notice it, because it is not deeply planned it just has to feel right.

I cut my teeth on poetry as a kid before I ever finished a novel. So rhythm definitely matters to me. I always read a piece aloud before putting it out into the world. It has to sound right for me to be satisfied with it.

Kagan MacTane (he/him)
OTOH, I know that not everyone subvocalizes, so if something just really needs to be said in a way that isn't mellifluous or that has an awkward rhythm, I'll just go for it. The meaning is most important; the rhythm is a nice addition. 2/2

#WordWeavers

I lost the ability to read without subvocalizing when I got more and more into acting, and started trying on *everything* for multiple possible inflections and rhythms. So whenever I read my own work, I'm doing that. 1/2

How it sounds is right up there with characters and story for me.

All The Attention while editing.

But full disclosure, I usually start a new writing session by looking over (and adjusting where needed) the results of the previous one, to ensure continuity and pacing. Rhythm plays into that, too.

It isn't exactly editing as I go, but my process is very far from the popular "just keep writing until it's done" drafting style.

ClaraBlackInk
The words themselves play a role here and can be disruptive to that general flow or they can provide that particular sound you need.

But, I don't think it is something that has to be approached as a rhythm issue. All writers pick up on something about that flow that they use when editing. I think it becomes instinctual for many as they practice through reading, writing and editing. As well as through conversation.

#WordWeavers

ClaraBlackInk
And even when reading quietly within our own head we still replicate that flow created through the sentence structure and the words used.

I don't think it is wrong not to pay attention to this but I think it is something that we do during the editing process in order to keep the flow going at the pace we want.

The combination of short and long sentences creates rhythm visually and verbally. Tight, terse writing makes the rhythm feel faster. Flowing writing feels dreamy.

#WordWeavers

I notice books that have terrible rhythm on paper. Certain sentences feel wrong and can disrupt the flow of reading.

I think this is different than the rhythm of poetry. It's more about how the sentences move as you read aloud

I just write for a bit, and then move on to other things, but I would say no I don't pay much attention to it
