I'm behind on posting, but intend to catch up. I'll write up episodes in terms of my first impression of the episodes. I'm posting on my Nmyownworld TenForward.social account, rather than my starbase80.wtf/@Still_Nimmy account.

Here I go!

Season 1, Episode 1, "Second Contact"

🖖🏾 The first animated Star Trek series since TAS (1973). This one starts in 2380, during the late TNG and DS9 time.

🖖🏾 This show is a humorous Star Trek series. Set on the starship the USS Cerritos.

🖖🏾 Is Mariner old enough to be allowed to get drunk?

🖖🏾 I'm loving Boimler's purple color hair.

🖖🏾 An Orion in Starfleet. She is very up in attitude. Hi Ensign Tendi!

🖖🏾 Ensign Boimler is a rule follower. Ensign Mariner is a maverick.

🖖🏾 A newly cybornetically enhanced ensign named Rutherford.

🖖🏾 So, Starfleet tucks ensigns away in a series of hallways of bunks.

🖖🏾 Okay, I'm loving Mariner's energy.

🖖🏾 Boimler is so nervous about being on the bridge.

🖖🏾 Commander Ransom is second in command of the Cerritos.

🖖🏾 Carol Freeman, captain of the Cerritos. She has it in for Mariner, and wants Boimler to spy on Mariner during an away mission, and report any violations Mariner commits. Hmm.

🖖🏾 Uh oh, Ransom has brought a contagion onto the Cerritos. People are turning into black goo spewing murder zombies. Rutherford is on a date with Ensign Barnes, but they don't let the emergency interfere with their date.

🖖🏾 The Chief Medical officer of the Cerritos is a Caitian named TAna. She's very direct.

🖖🏾 Mariner is caught by Boimler violating Starfleet policy. But, Mariner is trying to help Galardonian farmers by giving them farming tools.

🖖🏾 Mariner has served on five starships, but is still an ensign. She has a lot more experience than Boimler, even though they seem to be about the same age.

🖖🏾 I think Mariner and Boimler are in their very early 20s.

🖖🏾 The Monkees are considered a classical band in the future. Right on.

🖖🏾 Rutherford is more interested in engineering irregularities than in his date.

🖖🏾 "You'll be fine. Doc'll wave a light over it." Lol!

🖖🏾 Boimler hero worships the senior ship staff. Mariner, not so much. She is much more pragmatic and critical of the senior ship staff. Reasons for conflict between Mariner and Captain Freeman are becoming clear.

🖖🏾 Boimler intends to report Mariner's actions with the Galardonians to Freeman.

🖖🏾 Mariner and Boimler transport back to the Cerritos, in the midst of the infection and chaos. Boimler is disregarded, and disrespected, by the senior crew members.

🖖🏾 Boimler's run in with a large spider-like creature the Galadorians keep as cattle resulted in his being covered in slime. The slime has the cure for the infection running rampant on the Cerritos.

🖖🏾 T'Ana synthesizes a cure from the slime. The senior staff congratulates themselves, and continue to ignore Boimler. Mariner stands up for Boimler, but her words are ignored, except by Boimler.

🖖🏾 Wait, an infected Vulcan crew member has black slime on their face that looks like the Terran universe Spock's beard (TOS "Mirror, Mirror" s2e4). I wonder how many more easter eggs there are in Lower Decks.

🖖🏾 Boimler is in Freeman's office to report. He has to listen to her give all credit for solving the problem of the infection. And, she calls Boimler by the wrong name. Boimler doesn't tell on Mariner.

🖖🏾 Freeman gets a call from a Starfleet admiral. The two discuss what to do about Mariner. Wait. Mariner is Captain Freeman and that admiral's daughter!

🖖🏾 In the Cerritos lounge, Tendi and Rutherford bond over engineering chat. Boimler admits to Mariner's strong points, and tells her that he didn't tell on her.

🖖🏾 Lower decks! Lower decks!

I think the show is humorous, with some laugh out loud moments. All without disrespecting Star Trek or its fandom. A sort of reverent irreverence. That's a tough road to walk, but I think this episode does it successfully.

A lot is packed into this 24 minutes long episode. Introducing new Star Trek characters, and the USS Cerritos. Touching base with Star Trek mentions from TOS through TNG. I think it was all done successfully. It didn't feel rushed or crowded to me. There are likely more easter eggs that I missed.

I think this is a fun series that respects Star Trek, while giving a look at a Starfleet ship and crew that isn't considered the crowning glory of Starfleet, say like Enterprise ships and captains. But still fulfills an important aspect of keeping things running smoothly in the quadrant.

The title is an homage to the TNG episode, "Lower Decks" (s7 e15) which was about Enterprise-D crew members who weren't part of the command crew. That theme is carried over to this series, this time with humor.

I like this episode!

#LowerDecksRewatch #StarTrek #LowerDecks
