BLACKSMITH OPEN HOUSE in Pope Valley

When: Sunday, March 23, 2025 from 1pm to 4pm

Where: Henry Haus Blacksmith Shop at 5850 Chiles Pope Valley Road, Pope Valley, California (across from the Pope Valley Market)

Napa County Historical Society opens its historic Henry Haus Blacksmith Shop for a free demonstration. Local blacksmiths Ken Maxfield and Bob Fulton will showcase the legacy of this historic shop for visitors.

The drive to Pope Valley is especially beautiful in the spring. Just be sure the weather will be good before you go.

Although the #bridge closure would have been inconvenient, I had a look at what this #forge / #blacksmith makes and its not that large/heavy items (vehicles over 7 500 kg are forbidden from the bridge anyway) - I do wonder if it was a coincidence his business had trade decline and the real reason is even relatively middle class folk are skint, and simply can't afford artisan forged garden ornaments? #Suffolk #roads #transport

Back in 2018, I made this very handy mini egg-flip. And for what it was designed to do (flip eggs, move biscuits off trays, etc) it excelled.
However, youngest child has been using it to fry steaks and pressing down on the steak in the process, so the thin shank glued in to a turned wooden handle was a weak point. The wood broke.

Rather than just make another handle with the same problem, I set about fixing the attachment point.

I took some engineering grade stainless bar, and forged down a small part of it and formed a cone, then welded that to the egg-flip shank. The existing wooden handle fits inside beautifully. I'm now waiting for the epoxy holding it in there to set before it can go back in service.

A round bar of silver looking engineering grade stainless steel (salvaged material) about as thick as my finger.
Finished egg-flip with cone ferule and wooden handle inserted. Front view. The flipper end is about as big as my palm, the cone is welded on at the point of the bend in the original shank.
Back of the cone, showing the seam. This is not welded shut as there is no need, it isn't under that much stress and the wood is epoxied in place anyway.

Just a lil' reminder that I also work with teaching a 3 year course in blacksmithing. Me and my bestie Johan.

It's such an outlet for all the ideas that you never have time for when you're living 100% on producing. And all the projects and questions keep me sharp and still curious.

This fall, I got to present my and the woodworkers second-years with the task of reconstructing a pair of skates.
❤️ They did SO GOOD! And I'm endlessly proud of them! ❤️
