During my early years in the Marines and then the Army, our filed rations were C Rations. They came in a little box with three or four cans of food and an accessory bag. Interestingly, back then the accessory bag contained a pack of four cigarettes and a box of two chicklets. My preferred meal was ham and eggs, it was an acquired taste, and most guys didn't like them, so it was an easy trade. If I could heat them up and apply a little hot sauce, they were pretty good. We usually had heat tabs. There was one can with crackers and candy. I could open the can with my handy P38 can opener dump the contents, put a couple of holes in the bottom, add a heat tab and voila, I had a stove.
